• Chief’s Welcome

  • Greetings!  As Chief Residents, we would like to welcome you to our website and thank you for your interest in the UTSW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management.  We relish the opportunity to tell you why we love our training in Dallas!

The vision of this Department is to advance our superior academic training status and research capabilities, while continuing to provide excellent perioperative clinical care.  In this pursuit in the last two years we have moved into both UT Southwestern’s Clements University Hospital and the new Parkland Memorial Hospital.  These two state of the art facilities have provided a unique opportunity to enhance resident training and education by introducing additional OR, OB and satellite facilities for the administration of anesthesia.  These are only 2 of 7 different hospital campuses where the department performs greater than 130,000 anesthetics.  In these locales we perform the most challenging cases in the geographic area under the guidance of more than 200 exceedingly talented faculty.  Our staff completed diverse training from across the nation’s most respected general and fellowship anesthesia training programs.   All of these factors combine to make our training extensive, thorough, nuanced, and empowering preparing our graduates for employment across the country in academic, private, and fellowship settings. In addition to the above we have the pleasure of living in Dallas, one of the premier cities in the United States.  In the “Big D” you will find world class dining as well as the local staples of Tex-Mex and BBQ.  There is renowned shopping at Northpark and Galleria malls as well as the flagship Neiman Marcus store.  Entertainment options abound at venues such as the American Airlines Center, home to the Dallas Stars and Mavericks of the NHL and NBA, and AT&T Stadium, home of the Cowboys of the NFL.  Outdoor activities at local lakes, parks, and trails are also readily available year round with the temperate North Texas winters.  Residents live all over the city including trendy Uptown, on the rise Downtown and Victory Park, and the local suburbs providing affordable options near for everyone’s needs.   All of these aspects combine to make our time out of the hospital enjoyable, relaxing, and fulfilling.

Ultimately the heart and soul of any group are the people that make it up and their connection to their coworkers and the vision of the organization.  This begins with the Chairman of our program, Dr. Charles W. Whitten, who is a steadfast mentor for all of our residents and an impeccable role model of vigilance and compassion.  The vision continues with our residency program director Dr. Catherine Barden who not only guides us towards becoming exemplary physician anesthesiologists, but also to grow intellectually and professionally in our UTSW and personal families.  We can not say enough of the culture these two leaders have created to foster each individual resident’s personal career goals.

Thank you so much again for your interest in the UTSW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management.  Please feel welcomed to reach out to us by email below with any questions you may have regarding our program or residency application and training in general.  We are happy to provide or direct you towards the advice and answers that will guide you to the best setting for you.  This will be an exciting and rewarding time as you become an Anesthesiologist! We wish you all the best!

    Sincerely,
