• Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®)

  • The UT Southwestern Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management is pleased to offer a simulation course fulfilling one part of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA®) Part IV requirement. Our center has received endorsement from the ASA to offer MOCA® simulation courses and participates in the ASA Simulation Education Network (SEN) to collaborate with other endorsed institutions around the country.     • This simulation course is a day-long event lasting from 7AM-4PM.
    • This course will be conducted in a group format of 4-6 anesthesiologists.
    • The instructor: participant ratio will range from 1:3 to 1:4.
    • Each participant will take the primary lead role at least once throughout the day in the management of the simulated scenarios (the ABA/ASA requires that each diplomat serve in this role at least once).
    • It is important to underscore that these simulations ARE NOT A TEST AND YOU WILL NOT BE GRADED.


    • Participants will manage realistic, high-fidelity simulations which will pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of critically-ill patients. Participants will manage patients with airway, respiratory, and/or hemodynamic compromise. Once again, there will be no grading or testing involved.
    • Each simulation will be followed with a post-scenario video-debrief. The videos are used to provide a more insightful experience and all recordings are taken for the benefit of the participant, which will not be released from the center.
    • The debrief will serve as a time for self-reflection and an opportunity to initiate group discussions to help elicit effective team dynamic strategies in resolving a crisis (TeamSTEPPS®).
    • TeamSTEPPS® is an evidence-based teamwork system aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by improving communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals. Participants will acquire and apply many of the strategies developed by TeamSTEPPS ®in the management of a crisis including: communication, leadership, mutual support, and situational monitoring.
    • We will also aim to elicit key elements that will allow the participant to transfer these strategies to their daily clinical practices.
    • Every measure will be taken to ensure that these activities are conducted in a safe and relaxed environment.



    • Any cancellations occurring greater than 30 days prior to the course will receive a full refund minus a $250 processing fee.
    • There will be NO refunds for cancellations within 30 days of the course.
    • We reserve the right to reschedule the course greater than 30 days out from the offering for any reason.
    • If the minimum participation (4 participants) is not met, then the course will be cancelled at least 30 days prior to the scheduled course date.
    • These participants will be refunded their fee.
    • The course may be cancelled or rescheduled due to any inclement weather.


    This simulation course will serve to elicit various elements to improve the participant’s daily clinical practice.

    Upon completion of the day-long simulation course, participants will be asked to identify three key elements that will transfer and integrate into your daily practice. These will be submitted on-line to the ASA immediately upon completion of the course.

    A follow-up will be conducted by the ASA inquiring about the implementation of these identified strategies, after which MOCA® Part IV credit will be granted by the ABA.

    UTSW Crisis Management: Optimizing Team Dynamics with the Integration of TeamSTEPPS®

    Target Audience: M.D./D.O. in Anesthesiology

    Purpose & Intent: An interactive educational experience that exemplifies team centered and patient safety techniques to encourage a culture of communication and trust through high-fidelity simulation scenarios.

    Educational Objectives:

    1. Review optimal methods to manage difficult airways and hemodynamic instability as they relate to their scenarios and other comparable clinical situations.
    2. Integrate improved communication and performance that reflect best practices in team dynamics as a team leader in crisis management.
    3. Implement strategies to facilitate compliance with ACLS protocol and improve the functionality of code team through enhanced teamwork during intraoperative crisis.
    4. Identify three principles to improve daily clinical practice based off their experiences throughout the course and develop practice improvement plans for submission to the ABA.

    Accreditation: The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

    Credit Designation: The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 8.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    MOCA® Compliance this patient safety activity helps fulfill the patient safety CME requirement for Part II of the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA) of The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). Please consult the ABA website, http://www.theABA.org, for a list of all MOCA requirements.

    Off-Label Uses: Because this course is meant to educate physicians with what is currently in use and what may be available in the future, there may be “off-label” use discussed in the presentation. Speakers have been requested to inform the audience when off-label use is discussed.
