The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern provides trainees a comprehensive, multidisciplinary exposure to critical care across a variety of healthcare landscapes. During their training, fellows will learn current evidence-based medicine, advanced procedural skills, and practical leadership traits required to function as a consultant in critical care medicine, regardless of their ultimate practice setting.

Training Pathways
Our program offers three unique ACGME and Texas Medical Board-accredited training pathways:

(1) a 12-month pathway for anesthesiology-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine.

(2) a 24-month pathway for anesthesiology-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology.

(3) a 24-month pathway for emergency medicine-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine.

Fellows in the 24-month emergency medicine program will work 56 shifts in the emergency department over the course of their fellowship. Graduates of the first and second pathways will be eligible for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) critical care medicine board certification upon successful completion of their fellowship. Graduates of the third pathway will be eligible for the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Anesthesiology critical care medicine board certification upon successful completion of their fellowship

Didactics
Trainees participate in a robust didactic program that includes daily teaching rounds, formal resident and fellow lectures, multidisciplinary journal club conference, Trauma Institute of San Antonio (TRISAT) Critical Care online lecture series, critical care medicine board exam preparation, and high-fidelity critical care simulation sessions in UT Southwestern’s state-of-the-art Simulation Center. Additionally, fellows participate in multiple standardized examinations to help prepare them for their ABA APPLIED examination.

Scholarly Activity
UT Southwestern Medical Center offers abundant and diverse research opportunities across the institution. Fellows work closely with faculty mentors and participate in ongoing clinical and basic science research efforts, quality improvement initiatives, and academic writing projects.
